Film Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

I have been a fan of this series, since reading the first book, (twelve years ago) and loving every word printed. And have been an avid reader and watcher of both the books and movies. I loved them all, despite their faults and plot holes and with that in mind, I watched the last Harry Potter film at the cinemas today, this afternoon.

We've all known, for a while now, that the acting standards of the three main characters, is not that brilliant. But these movies were not made with acting awards being their main goal. Aside from the obvious monetary gain of making films of a very popular series, there was a story to be told. And in each film, it has been a huge thrill ride from beginning to end, with comedic and some romance scenes in each one of them.

This one, was no exception. I've read each of the books several times and despite knowing how the story goes, I actually felt nervous for all the characters and found that I had to remind myself, several times, that it would be fine, that Harry would do what he needed to, that it would be okay. That feeling has to be attributed to the film makers' skill in keeping the pace fast and frantic when it needed to be and leaving room for the more dramatic and wordy scenes.

Another part that I loved about this film, was the music score. It sounded very familiar to me, and I found that once more, one of my favourite film composers, Alexandre Desplat was responsible. He has such a distinctive tone to his film scores and each one, including this one for Harry Potter has such emotion in each note that it raises the scenes that it is played in to a whole other level.

A stunning conclusion to the series, and I look forward to the next book or movie that I read or watch. Even though I've read them plenty to know them off by heart.

  1. David Yates has recalled the final scene Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint shot together for Harry Potter.
The director, who has been at the helm for four of the eight films in the series, told MB that the trio share a "tender, lovely scene" at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
Yates said: "We shot the scene on the viaduct, outside Hogwarts, and it was really peaceful. It was a really sunny day. It was all backlit.
"And it's a very tender scene where they sort of reflect on everything that's happened, all the battles and everything, and they hold hands, and the camera falls away. It's a really tender, lovely scene."
He continued: "I said to them, 'Look, guys, this is the last scene we're all going to do with you three together in front of the camera. So, it's not just the last scene of these three characters in the movie, this is your last scene in this series of films. That's what today is about.' And it infused it with a kind of emotion which was really moving actually."

And the quote is from one of the other Harry Potter films, possibly my favourite line in the films' series:
"Dumbledore: It is not our abilities that show what we truly are. It is our choices."
