Film Review: Seven Psychopaths

Not too long after I watched this film, I watched an interview with the main actor, Colin Farrell.

He said that the writer director of this film, Martin McDonagh, implied that In Bruges (earlier collaboration) was a mere rehearsal, before this film, to see if he liked directing/writing a film.

Whether or not that is true, what is, is that the quality of this film is beyond reproach.

This is considering the subject matter and the different stories that make up the whole and the consistency and dark humour that flows through them all. With a less gifted writer director, I would have been confused within mere seconds of the film's beginning.

Interesting side note, the two actors in the opening sequence are Michael Stuhlbarg and Michael Pitt, who starred together in the TV series Boardwalk Empire as Arnold Rothstein and Jimmy Darmody respectively.

This film also has a stunning cast, Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Tom Waits, Christopher Walken, and Woody Harrelson. Excellent supporting cast, which includes Zeljko Ivanek (also in In Bruges), Abbie Cornish and Olga Kurylenko.

To add to all this, the composer Carter Burwell, writes a compelling score to complete the film.

  1. This quote comes from the "rehearsal film" of Martin McDonagh.

“Ray: Do you think this is good?
Ken: Do I think what's good?
Ray: You know, going around in a boat, looking at stuff?
    Ken: Yes, I do. It's called sight-seeing.”
